We have just launched our new Inward Opening Fairy Doors and we’d like to show you how to make a fairy house from a shoe box. So easy, cheap and perfect to display your Inward Opening Fairy Door!
Our new Inward Opening Fairy Doors as the name says, can only open inward. So if you attach them to a wall, the door cannot open but if you make a display box or fairy house to attach them, they can open into a magical fairy world…. that you create!
And we show you….
How to Make a Fairy House from a Shoe Box
- 1 Large Shoe Box (we used one with a flip top lid ie Sketchers Box)
- Glue Stick
- Wrapping paper (to cover the outside of the box)
- Pretty pictures to decorate the inside (we used a princess garden scene we found in a colouring book)
- Sticky Tape
- 1 Inward Opening Fairy Door
- Trace Around the Fairy Door
Place your fairy door on top of the lid, make sure the bottom of the fairy door is level with the edge of the box.
Trace around the inside back edge of the fairy door. (This will form the opening that you will insert your fairy door into)
- Cut this part out
This forms where you insert your fairy door
- A ‘flip lid’ shoe box makes it easier to open the box to decorate the inside
- Decorate the inside of your Fairy House with pictures
We found pretty princess garden pictures from a colouring book but use any pretty pictures you like. Whatever you would like to see when you open your fairy door.
We also thought pictures of the inside of a fairy house (or Hobbit house) would also be beautiful.
If you don’t have any pictures on hand, maybe you could search for them on the internet, print them and cut these out to use.
Cut out your pictures to the size of the inside of your shoe box and stick them around the inside. We found a glue stick works best and is the easiest to use.
- Grass Mat on the bottom
We used a cut out piece of one of our Grass Mats to create a grassy floor on the bottom of our box. (although we discovered using this method makes it difficult to open the fairy door as it gets caught on the grass. So if you want to use Grass, make sure you cut the door opening higher up from the edge of the box – not too close to the bottom edge like we did… ooops!)
For a smoother bottom, just use paper.
- Cover the Outside
Using the wrapping paper, cover the outside of the box.
Cut around the door opening and fold the paper over the tops and bottom.
- Insert your Fairy Door
- This is what the inside looks like
- Decorate the inside with Accessories
- Decorate the Outside
We used Pink Ivy, White Ivy, Fairy, Pink Mushrooms, Door Mat, Flowers, Rabbit, Flamingo.
We also used a strand of our Fairy Door Lights to add a magical twinkle light to the inside. This would be beautiful at night time!
This is how to make a fairy house from a shoe box! You could also use the same technique with any box. A bigger box would make an even bigger fairy house!
