Anzac Biscuits are a huge Aussie favourite and we have found the best Anzac Biscuits Ever to cook with the Kids.
This Saturday is Anzac Day, a day we stop to remember and be grateful to all the brave Men and Women who fought for the freedom of this amazing country, many of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice.
So how does this all relate to biscuits?
During the war, wives and mums would bake biscuits and send them to their husbands and sons on the battlefield. Biscuits were inexpensive to make, used ingredients that didn’t spoil on the long journey and were such a tasty treat.
Over the years Anzac biscuits have become an Aussie icon. They are great with a cuppa (or a glass of milk for the kids) and are so easy to make.
Here is the recipe for the Best Anzac Biscuits Ever…
- 1 cup (90g) rolled oats
- 1 cup (150g) Plain flour
- 1 cup (220g) Brown Sugar
- 1/2 cup (40g) Desiccated Coconut
- 125 g Butter
- 2 tbsp golden syrup
- 1 1/2 tbsp water
- 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)
What to do
1. Preheat oven to 160°C. Grease oven trays and line with baking paper.
2. Sift the Flour into a bowl. Add Oats, Sugar and Coconut.
3. In a small saucepan, melt the Butter, Golden Syrup and the Water; stirring over low heat until smooth.
4. Stir the Bi-carb Soda (baking powder) into the melted liquids then stir into dry ingredients.
5. Stir the melted ingredients into the bowl of dry ingredients
6. Roll level tablespoons of mixture into balls and line them up 5cm apart on Trays, flatten slightly.
7. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden; leave to cool on trays.
Anzac biscuits are best when they feel soft to touch, even when cooked. If you like your Anzac biscuits softer, decrease the oven temperature and/or baking time.
The biscuits will become firmer as cool on the trays
